Editorial:  The Pace of Change
June 24, 2008 -- The last editor of Emerging China only lasted a day -- not even long enough to get on the masthead.

That's either a sad, sad reflection on our publication, or a testament to how much we value ethics and accountability. That editor filed a story plagiarized material. Our fact-checking process caught it before it went out, and that editor was gone the next day.

If we'd caught the problem a day later, we would have had to retract the story, which was scheduled to run in a global payments publication. And the editor's name would have been right there in the retraction. Since the story was caught early, that editor has an opportunity to learn from this mistake. It's a career setback, but not a death sentence.

But that got us thinking -- could we find anyone good enough to head up Emerging China? This publication has been a great training ground for writers, some of whom have gone on to full-time jobs at our company, and others to writing for U.S.-based business magazines. We've been picked up by Google News, and got a recent marketing deal with itv-asia.com>ITV Asia -- our first webcast aired last week.

But without a strong person at the helm, the site would have withered away.

Starting next month, I'll be spending more than half of my time back in the United States, dealing with our corporate clients there. As many of our readers know, the parent organization of Emerging China, Trombly Ltd., runs news bureaus for mostly US-based business publications. We cover Shanghai for The Hollywood Reporter, all of Asia-Pacific for CardLine Global, and all the emerging markets for Securities Industry News. Our stories have run in Computerworld and CIO Magazine, Chief Marketing Officer magazine, Managing Automation, and MarketWatch.

Our correspondents are based in China, India, the Philippines, Russia, and other regions, with editors in Shanghai, Mumbai, and Manila. But all of our clients are in the U.S. and Europe, and as the number of clients increases, so does the time I spend on the road.

Fortunately, we've been able to find just the right guy. Richard Trombly, has worked as an editor at Boston-based Industrial Distribution, and at the Shanghai Daily. He has written for the Associated Press, Computerworld, and other leading publications. He knows technology and he knows manufacturing -- two keys areas for China business.

Most of all, he knows how to develop writers.

He knows how to teach them how to report and write stories that are accurate, thorough, and readable.

He is a very significant addition to our team. Thank you for joining us, and welcome on board.
