Brief: Chengdu to Build Four Light Railways
September 20, 2007 -- Chengdu is scheduling the construction of 4 light railway lines from the city center to Wenjiang, Pixian, Longquanyi and Xinjin, reported Chengdu Business News September 13. The downtown-Wenjiang line, about 20 kilometers long, will be the first to commence, and upon completion is expected to shorten the journey from downtown to Wenjiang to just 25 minutes. This line will reach Qingyang District, and will be connected to the No. 4 railway to downtown.
Chengdu already has several transportation options to neighboring cities planned in the future, like the express way, a trunk road, and light railways. The light railway however is the most welcome owing to its speed, reliability and ability to transport large populations with the use of comparatively fewer resources. Moreover, the fare will be just half that of a subway. According to Tan Bangcai, Vice President of Bureau of Communications of Wenjiang District, the downtown to Wenjiang line is expected to commence construction in June 2008 at the earliest, and will be the pilot section of the rail transportation project. |
