Brief: Xinjiang Transfers Water to Tarim River for the Ninth Time
October 18, 2007 -- Daxihaizi Reservoir in Xinjiang, will open its floodgates to transfer water to Tarim River, China's largest inland river. It is the ninth time that this form of water treatment has used to clean up the Tarim, reported Xinhua.
The water transfer will last about 40 days, with a total of nearly 50 million cubic meters of water being moved. From May 2000 to November 2006, Xinjiang Province had transferred water to Tarim River eight times, with a total water transfer of about 2,245 million cubic meters. During the period, it also transferred water to Taitema Lake six times. This brought the lake and the river together, which had been separate for over the 30 years. Since 2001, China has spent 6.579 billion yuan for comprehensive treatment of Tarim River and the total investment budget for this treatment is 10.739 billion. Water transfer to the lower reach of the river is one of the main treatment methods. |
